Argentina weather can be divided in four distinctively different types: there’s the pleasantly mild weather of the central pampas, the aridness of the high plateau and its neighboring areas, the extreme heat of the northern Chaco region and the glacial regions of southern Patagonia with their sub-antartcic cold. The variations in Argentina weather are by no means surprising especially when the country’s unique geographical position is taken into account. The second largest country in South America and the eighth in the world by land area, Argentina is about  3,900 km (2,400 mi) long from north to south, and 1,400 km (870 mi) from east to west (maximum values. It covers the area between the Atlantic Ocean in the east and the Andes mountain range in the west, bordering Chile to the west and south, Brazil and Uruguay to the northeast and Paraguay and Bolivia to the north.

Warm

The provinces of Misiones and Corrientes, the northern area of Entre Ríos and the eastern section of the Chaco region are the areas mostly associated with warm, subtropical weather. There is no dry season here as rain falls abundantly throughout the year. Despite the similarities with the above mentioned provinces, the area comprised of Salta, the west of Formosa and Chaco, the eastern plains of Tucumán, nearly the whole of Santiago del Estero and the NW Santa Fe does have a dry season in the first half of the yea, while a tropical highland weather is most commonly found in the mountainous area that includes the sub–Andean hills, its valleys and gullies.

Moderate

Argentina weather becomes moderate as we reach the includes the province of Buenos Aires, a large area of Entre Rios, centre and south of Santa Fe, the eastern strip of Cordoba and a part to the NE of La Pampa, largely thanks to the influences of the ocean. In the nearby Cordoba hills and their valleys the weather becomes milder, eventually deriving into a region of arid climate as one heads out west.

Arid

The high plateau and the Andes, from Catamarca down to Mendoza are under the influence of arid weather, a condition that roughly influences the area of the Pampas hills as well. The weather in the area that stretches down to the south of the region of hills and plains can best be described as arid steppe but the aridity is lost as we approach the south of Mendoza, finally handing over the reigns to Patagonian cold arid weather as we reach the area between 40º and 42º south parallels.

Austral

In the Patagonian Andes the weather takes yet another turn towards a more humid condition, with a progression of rain, while low temperatures, very little precipitation and strong winds during the winter season characterize Patagonia’s windy weather.
At the south of the previous zone, in the area that includes a strip of the Santa Cruz province as well as that of Tierra del Fuego, the weather becomes humid–austral climate. With the exception of the high mountains where Argentina’s weather naturally becomes snowy, the area is under the influence of heavier rainfalls and is distinguished by the lack of a proper summer period of moderate temperatures. Meanwhile the high mountainous region experiences a glacial type of weather with glacier spots in the high Patagonian mountain chain.

Argetina weather becomes misty and cold with frequent storms in the austral islands weather region. Isla de los Estados has an oceanic cold type of weather, the conditions becoming more defines on the Malvinas Islands, where the winters are considerably cooler and the summers scarcely moderate. The whole surface of the Islas Orcadas island group is almost covered by glaciers as the islands are under the spell of snow weather.

Winter

During winter Argentina weather is moderated by the influence of major winds. On the flat plains of Patagonia as well as the Pampas, the Pampero wind blows through the area especially after cold fronts, cooling down the air. In late winter a warm wind blowing from the north creates milder conditions, while west-central Argentina is affected by a hot and dry wind, locally known as the Zonda.

Spring

Springtime in Argentina is a generally mild period, although not very long in time span in the northern parts of the country. Argentina weather during the spring season is frequented by hailstorms and thunderstorms and is characterized by the extremely hot days of late September, that are usually hotter than summer.

Summer

In contrast, summer temperatures vary greatly between regions; averaging 9 °C in the south while in the north they soar to an average of 27 °C. For a short period only, areas in the northern part of the country can experience scorching heat with temperatures reaching up to 45 °C. Heat waves are usually intercepted by the frequent emergence of cold fronts that lower temperatures as much as 15 °C.
